The Review
As a master named Miles once told his band, "I pay you to practice on stage." I imagine the confidence, as a musician, a cat must have to accept such a challenge. One thing for certain is that every show is special.
The second coming of The Chronicle (Atlanta’s own legendary fusion band) at Sugar Hill club in downtown Underground Atlanta on Tuesday evenings is created in that same spirit of spontaneity which "live" music generates. Sugar Hill club is a cosmopolitan, intimate venue where the urban faithful can dress up and down to socialize.
The Chronicle was known as a band that could play Funk, Jazz, Rock and Hip Hop all in the same set. Featuring master drummer Lil John Roberts and keyboardist Phil Davis, these local musicians are world renowned players who are individually acclaimed and together elevate the "Jam Session" to "Traditional Art." As advertised "Atlanta’s Finest" musicians and vocalists represent their gifts supported by the musical talents of original members Billy Odoms (g) and DJ Kemet (trn tbls) with Tres Gilbert (b) and the captivating Joi (v)(diva).
Every Tuesday ATLiens listen as rifts build into familiar compositions anchored by funk beats that cause the club to bounce, people stand to offer their ceremonial dance, necks break like whiplash 'cause Kemet keeps cuttin' ya in the head (from up over your right shoulder). Yeah, this is new, like church on Thursday (I remember the Yin Yang), I was ready for the reunion.
I warn all who prefer musical shows where the MD (musical director) wears a tie; you may want to sit this set out. However for those who enjoy LISTENING to masters at play I encourage you to come out, support and become a part of our local music scene and this special ensemble.
