Marcus Miller - FREE Sony BMG Import

Bassist extraordinaire Marcus Miller continues to shock and amaze us with the release of his 2007 release “FREE”. This CD was available at the North Sea Jazz Festival on Friday of the show and was completely sold out EVERYWHERE by Sunday of the show. What was I thinking when I didn’t get my own copy?
This release features an all-star cast of characters –Poogie Bell, Lalah Hathaway, Paul Jackson, Jr., Keb' Mo', Dave Sanborn, Tom Scott, Michael "Patches" Stewart, Bernard Wright, and Corinne Bailey Rae. Marcus begins with a tune called “Blast!” thematic to his concert openers during the North Sea Jazz Festival and continues in to “Funk Joint” – the first two tracks for the true funkateers. Bailey Rae glides into the Deniece Williams’ penned tune “FREE”, the title cut – yes “FREE”. You’ll have to hear this one for yourself. Good stuff.
Miles Davis’ “Jean Pierre” revisited is a live show favorite, but also a treat to the palate in its recorded form. My personal favorite Tower of Power’s “What is Hip” could it be so??!! I have to admit that I did not hear it in its entirety, but what I did hear is too good to be true. You can’t go wrong covering Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” and Marcus strikes gold with harmonica player, Gregoire Maret as you fall in love with this unlikely solo instrument.
The processing Marcus uses to record his bass and the way it translates on the live set will send bass players alike on a mission to acquire the same processing gadgets. I may not know what it is, but I know what I know!
If you’re expecting the same bass acrobats from Mr. Miller that you’ve heard in the 80’s and early 90’s, you’re sadly mistaken. He’s a true innovator. He’s accompanied the greats and made them sound even greater. As a songwriter, he chooses tunes both abstract and familiar. As a musician, he is giving and forgiving – deeply admired and respected. As a band leader, he pushes the musicians around him to excellence.
Stay tuned for AtlantaJazz.Info’s review on Marcus Millers’ performances during the North Sea Jazz Festival………..

Please note “Free” will be available as an “Import” only in mid-August. His “people” informed me that the U.S. should expect a CD in October with a different title and a few additional tracks!
