The Event

The Review

It was a chilly Saturday evening in Atlanta on Nov. 18, '06, however the atmosphere in the Apache, midtown Atlanta's legendary club, was very warm and cozy as all awaited to be entertained by Atlanta's own Heratio. A standing room only crowd greeted the singer who surprised all with "ten minutes" of stand up from a recent personal experience. Generally known as "a funny guy" he stood solo on the stage and proceeded to make all in attendance appreciate life in comic fashion as he described how he learned his house was on fire the night before. The entire family is fine.

The show began with a stirring solo by keyboardist, extraordinaire, Phil Davis then joined by group, Aaron Clay on bass, Jorel “J-Fly” Flynn on drums, Mark Strowbridge on guitar and three lovely back up vocalists (Lola James, Regina Odum, Artia Lockett). Joey Sommerville played trumpet on their cooperative effort, "So Fine."  Having seen Heratio perform before I knew the band was always "off da chain" and we were not disappointed. The night was dedicated mainly to original music and the band really set off Heratio original compositions. The interplay between Phil (k) and Mark (g) created a funky, sophisticated texture driven by J-Fly's beats and meter and Eric's low end theory which makes me really appreciate Atlanta's local music scene. We're spoiled!

The show also featured one of the back up singers, Ms. Lockett, who delivered two moving original pieces in her Atlanta debut. Another benefit of Atlanta's close knit local talent base and Heratio’s generosity in sharing his stage.

For about an hour and a half we were treated to an outstanding set of music featuring songs from the well received "Bootleg Teaser" along with original music which hopefully will appear on his follow up release, possibly of a live recording rumored to be, "in the works."

Final Analysis

This show was a stunning success earning 3 out of a potential 4 music notes for originality and the quality of the performance. Atlanta if you're not aware, these are world class musicians. We at Atlanta Jazz have heard some of the best artists in the world and can only hope that we continue to support this vital outlet for local artists.
